Integrated Care Guide
Rather than waiting, we treat the underlying causes disrupting growth velocity
When growth velocity falters, we first restore the physical foundations for healthy child development
We evaluate growth curves alongside appetite, digestion, sleep, respiratory health, and pubertal progression, targeting the specific barriers hindering your child's growth.
OUR APPROACH
Rather than waiting because a child is small, we find why their growth curve is faltering
A child's growth cannot be judged by height alone. Appetite, digestion, sleep, rhinitis, recurrent colds, physical stamina, activity level, weight, and pubertal timing are intricately interrelated.
SOIAN Korean Medicine Clinic does not leave poor growth to passive waiting. We identify the real barriers—such as poor appetite, weak digestion, disrupted sleep, rhinitis, low stamina, or rapid puberty—and structure constitution herbal medicine, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and Chuna.
PEDIATRIC GUIDE
Explore based on your child's primary symptoms
Select each card to navigate to the relevant section on this page.
Poor Growth & Height Velocity
If height percentiles drop or annual growth velocity slows, we identify and treat whether appetite, sleep, respiratory issues, or puberty are hindering growth.
Pediatric Anorexia & Digestive Issues
Instead of force-feeding, we foster natural hunger and comfortable postprandial digestion.
Pediatric Rhinitis & Recurrent Colds
We differentiate allergic rhinitis from new infections, lingering post-cold coughs, and delayed recovery for targeted care.
Precocious Puberty & Accelerated Maturation
We evaluate the onset timing and tempo of puberty, bone age, and remaining growth windows together.
GROWTH SUPPORT
Poor Growth & Height Velocity
Enabling your child's inherent growth potential to unfold naturally
Rather than passively waiting because a child is short, we check whether their percentile curve is dipping and verify the past year's growth velocity.
Some children are smaller than peers but grow steadily, whereas others within average ranges show slowing growth velocities with continuously declining percentiles.
Growth depends not only on genetics and growth hormone, but also on nutritional status, appetite, digestion, sleep, physical activity, chronic rhinitis, frequent colds, weight, and pubertal timing. Nutrition and sleep directly influence the GH/IGF-1 axis.
We first evaluate the conditions hindering growth
- When the height gap with peers steadily widens
- When annual growth velocity noticeably declines compared to prior years
- When height percentiles continuously decline over time
- When food intake is minimal and weight fails to gain appropriately
- When abdominal pain, constipation, or loose stools recur
- When rhinitis and frequent colds chronically disrupt sleep and meals
- When late bedtimes, restless sleep, and chronic daytime fatigue persist
- When rapid weight gain occurs or secondary sexual characteristics appear prematurely
SOIAN Korean Medicine Clinic never looks at height in isolation. We evaluate growth curves, weight, parental growth histories, appetite, digestion, bowel habits, sleep, respiratory health, fatigue, activity levels, and pubertal milestones.
We make modifiable growth barriers the direct focus of clinical treatment
If a child eats poorly or suffers indigestion, the body cannot utilize the necessary building blocks for growth. Shallow sleep and accumulated fatigue disrupt circadian rhythms of repair and activity. Children with excessive tension and low stamina must first restore the physical reserves needed for active play.
SOIAN Korean Medicine Clinic's growth care is not passive management waiting for height to increase. It directly treats the systemic obstacles preventing a child from eating well, digesting smoothly, sleeping soundly, breathing clearly through the nose, and staying actively energized.
We tailor treatment to your child's constitution and clinical status
SOIAN Korean Medicine Clinic does not apply one-size-fits-all growth treatments.
Constitution Acupuncture
Treatment directions are guided by appetite, digestion, sleep, tension, and systemic vitality.
Growth Pharmacopuncture
Selectively applied for children needing physical stamina and restorative support during growth phases.
Constitution-Specific Growth Herbal Medicine
Prescribed distinctly for children with weak digestion/absorption, depleted stamina/recovery, or internal heat and tension causing restless sleep.
Growth Chuna & TMJ Balance Therapy
Relieves muscular and articular tension for comfortable movement, selectively indicated when jaw clenching, cervical strain, and sleep disturbances co-occur.
Clinical trials in children using standardized herbal extracts containing Astragalus membranaceus, Eleutherococcus senticosus, and Phlomoides umbrosa reported slight increases in 24-week height velocity compared to placebo. However, rather than universally applying a fixed formula, we treat based on each child's constitution and actual growth trajectory.
Korean Medicine Clinical Practice Guidelines also recommend pattern-based herbal medicine, acupuncture, and myofascial manual therapies for pediatric and adolescent growth disorders.
Key factors to verify before considering growth hormone injections
Not every child with short stature requires growth hormone injections. While children with confirmed growth hormone deficiency or genetic disorders require pediatric endocrinology care, in the absence of clear deficiency, individual variability in efficacy and the burdens of long-term daily injections and monitoring must be weighed. Guidelines advise individualized risk-benefit assessments rather than routine administration for idiopathic short stature.
When growth velocity markedly decelerates, puberty starts unusually early or late, or weight loss and systemic symptoms appear, evaluations including bone age, hormonal assays, thyroid panels, and chronic illness screening are considered.
SOIAN Korean Medicine Clinic's growth care does not attempt to artificially force height gain. We construct customized therapies to help children eat well, digest comfortably, sleep deeply, and stay active, fostering an internal environment where innate growth potential flourishes.
Back to 4 Care Cards ↑APPETITE & DIGESTION
Pediatric Anorexia & Digestive Issues
Creating a body that feels healthy hunger and comfortable digestion
Some children do not feel hungry at mealtimes, stopping after just a few spoonfuls. Others hold food in their mouths, show severe selectivity, or avoid eating altogether due to postprandial stomach aches or bloating.
It is necessary to determine whether the child lacks hunger cues, experiences digestive discomfort upon eating, or suffers irregular bowel habits.
Such behaviors cannot simply be dismissed as picky eating or poor disposition. SOIAN Korean Medicine Clinic prioritizes creating a physiological state where hunger arises naturally and eating feels comfortable, rather than forcing another spoonful.
The reasons for poor eating vary from child to child
Some children have innately small appetites, tire easily, and struggle to gain weight. Others feel prematurely full after small bites, frequently complaining of abdominal distension, belching, or stomach aches.
Frequent snacking and sugary drinks can blunt mealtime hunger, while chronic constipation or loose stools suppress appetite. Other children develop stomach aches and reduced food intake when anxious or in unfamiliar settings.
- Children with weak digestion and low physical stamina
- Children with food stagnation and persistent abdominal bloating
- Children experiencing abdominal pain and anorexia under stress
- Children with internal heat and restless sleep who tire easily
- Children whose appetite fails to recover after rhinitis and colds
SOIAN Korean Medicine Clinic does not ask only about meal volume. We evaluate weight, growth curves, abdominal pain, distension, bowel movements, sleep, fatigue, cold/rhinitis history, and emotional tension to identify why your child eats poorly.
Gentle treatments tailored to child's age and temperament
Pediatric anorexia treatment starts with gentle, non-threatening modalities so children do not fear therapy.
Basic Constitution Acupuncture
Applied to comfortable acupoints to regulate digestion, bowel habits, tension, and restorative balance.
Constitution Digestive Herbal Medicine
Prescribed distinctly for weak digestion, food stagnation, or stress-induced abdominal pain.
Pediatric Pharmacopuncture
Can be administered briefly and gently according to clinical status even for young children unable to cooperate verbally.
External Herbal Patch Therapy
An excellent needle-free alternative for children apprehensive about acupuncture or injections.
What matters is not the number of treatments, but whether the child can comfortably sustain therapy. We configure only essential modalities tailored to age, digestive status, and treatment response.
Increasing appetite alone is not the sole objective of treatment
The goal of care is not simply temporarily increasing meal intake. It is ensuring the child naturally feels hunger, experiences less abdominal discomfort and bloating after meals, achieves smooth bowel movements, and recovers stamina and active play. We also monitor whether weight and growth velocity stably track along their percentile curve.
Recent Korean Medicine Clinical Practice Guidelines for pediatric anorexia recommend herbal medicine, acupuncture, pediatric Chuna, and herbal patch applications, as well as combined therapies. While referencing this evidence, we avoid standardized formulas and customize care based on constitution, symptoms, and tracked progress.
Please reduce mealtime tension at home
Chasing a child around with food or turning every meal into a battle over volume can deepen food aversion. Establish clear intervals between meals and snacks, ensuring milk, juice, or snacks right before meals do not displace appetite. Parents decide what and when to serve, while avoiding excessive coercion over how much the child eats.
Situations requiring prior medical examination
- When weight declines or the growth curve continuously drops
- When swallowing is difficult or choking occurs frequently
- When vomiting and diarrhea persist
- When bloody stools or hematemesis occur
- When bilious (green) vomiting occurs
- When severe abdominal pain or fever is present
- When severe food phobia or extreme food refusal occurs
SOIAN Korean Medicine Clinic does not view a poor eater as merely picky. We examine constitution, digestion, bowel habits, sleep, fatigue, and emotional tension to help your child feel natural hunger, digest comfortably, and regain healthy growth momentum.
Back to 4 Care Cards ↑RHINITIS & RESPIRATORY CARE
Pediatric Rhinitis & Recurrent Colds
We first distinguish a new cold from lingering post-cold sequelae
Some children sneeze, pour clear rhinorrhea, and suffer nasal congestion every morning. Others improve temporarily on cold medication only to cough and spike fevers again a few days later.
We distinguish between allergic pediatric rhinitis with hyperreactive nasal mucosa, recurrent acute infections, and lingering post-cold sequelae with delayed recovery.
While outward symptoms may look alike, their root causes often differ. SOIAN Korean Medicine Clinic does not explain these simply as vague 'low immunity,' but treats according to your child's constitution and exact disease stage.
Rhinitis and post-cold sequelae require distinct treatment strategies
Pediatric rhinitis frequently involves paroxysmal sneezing, watery rhinorrhea, nasal congestion, and ocular/nasal pruritus in the mornings, nights, seasonal transitions, or dusty environments. Nighttime mouth breathing and sleep fragmentation from congestion lead to morning fatigue, poor appetite, and reduced concentration.
Among children who seem to catch colds repeatedly, many have unresolved prior infections. Although fever and myalgia resolved, persistent cough or phlegm and unrecovered appetite/stamina cause symptoms to flare up again upon returning to daycare or outdoor activities.
In Korean Medicine, some of these states are identified as a state where pulmonary function has not fully recovered and residual heat and stagnation linger in the lung channel. Rather than heavily suppressing symptoms again, we clear lingering stagnation so that cough, respiratory mucosa, appetite, sleep, and physical stamina regain a normal recovery rhythm.
Herbal medicine tailored to constitution and disease stage forms the core
Not all children with rhinitis have cold constitutions. Children with copious watery discharge and chills, severe mucosal edema with nasal obstruction, purulent yellow rhinorrhea with heat and thirst, or concurrent digestive and stamina weakness all require distinct prescriptions.
Evaluating constitution, rhinorrhea characteristics, congestion and sneezing patterns, sleep, digestion, bowel habits, sweating, and fatigue together, we prescribe Constitution-Specific Rhinitis Herbal Medicine. Various herbal medicines used for allergic rhinitis have been studied for their effects on histamine release, mast cell stabilization, and allergic inflammation; however, rather than relying on a single herb, we prioritize formulating a balanced prescription tailored to your child's constitution and symptoms.
For children with post-cold cough, rhinorrhea, low-grade fevers, and fatigue, we differentiate the stage of illness and nature of residual heat. Acute-phase prescriptions differ from recovery-phase prescriptions, and rather than blindly clearing heat or tonifying, the sequential approach of resolving residual heat while replenishing depleted vitality is considered vital.
Gentle and comfortable treatments for children
Centered on herbal medicine, constitution acupuncture and pediatric pharmacopuncture can be combined according to age and symptoms. For younger children apprehensive about needles, comfortable alternatives like external herbal patch therapy are available.
Constitution acupuncture is applied to harmonize digestion, sleep, and fatigue alongside rhinitis and respiratory symptoms. Pediatric pharmacopuncture and patch therapies are selectively used to support mucosal recovery, chronic cough, and systemic health.
The goal of care is not merely drying up a runny nose immediately. We evaluate whether your child breathes comfortably through the nose, sleeps deeply, recovers appetite and active energy, and breaks the cycle of protracted post-cold symptoms.
Situations where antibiotics and antipyretics are necessary
Antibiotics are essential when bacterial infections such as pneumonia, bacterial rhinosinusitis, or acute otitis media are suspected. Antipyretics are also appropriately used when fever causes significant distress or pain.
However, if antibiotics were repeatedly used for uncomplicated viral infections or treatment focused solely on suppressing temperature numbers and overt symptoms, it is essential to check whether cough, appetite, sleep, and stamina truly normalized afterward. SOIAN Korean Medicine Clinic does not oppose conventional medications. Differentiating whether active infection control, allergic rhinitis therapy, or clearance of residual heat and recovery support is needed right now is what matters most.
Red-flag symptoms requiring immediate medical evaluation
If severe dyspnea, marked wheezing, cyanosis around the lips, lethargy, or persistent high fever occur, prompt pediatric medical evaluation is required.
If productive cough persists for over 4 weeks, pneumonia recurs, purulent rhinorrhea with facial pain or severe headache persists, or snoring and sleep apnea are suspected, underlying conditions like asthma, sinusitis, or adenoid hypertrophy must be evaluated.
SOIAN Korean Medicine Clinic does not view a child with recurrent rhinorrhea and cough simply as having 'weak immunity.' We differentiate constitutional allergic rhinitis from new infections and lingering post-cold heat/recovery delays, treating primarily with herbal medicine. Restoring clear nasal breathing, deep sleep, and complete recovery from cold sequelae is our pediatric respiratory goal.
Back to 4 Care Cards ↑EARLY PUBERTY CARE
Precocious Puberty & Accelerated Maturation
Rather than blindly suppressing puberty, we correct the prematurely accelerated pace of growth
When early breast budding, body odor, acne, or pubic hair appear, parents worry about precocious puberty. While a sudden growth spurt might seem positive initially, rapid pubertal progression accelerates bone age, leading to premature growth plate closure.
More critical than current height is assessing when secondary sexual characteristics began, their rate of progression, the discrepancy between bone age and chronological age, and the remaining growth window.
SOIAN Korean Medicine Clinic does not base treatment on pubertal signs alone. We analyze growth curves, annual growth velocity, weight changes, bone age, appetite, digestion, sleep, internal heat, emotional tension, and psychological state to uncover why maturation accelerated.
Children with accelerated puberty are not all identical
In Korean Medicine, growth and reproductive maturation are explained through the development of kidney qi and kidney essence. Classical texts noted that female physiological maturity traditionally matures around age 14, viewing excessively early or delayed menarche/secondary sexual development as disharmonies in the kidney qi regulating growth and reproduction.
However, precocious puberty is not viewed merely as a simple kidney qi deficiency.
Kidney Yin Deficiency & Deficient Heat
We check for facial/upper-body heat flushing, excessive sweating, body odor, restless sleep, thirst, constipation, and emotional irritability.
Liver Qi Stagnation & Emotional Tension
We evaluate mood swings, chest or abdominal tightness, sleep disturbances, recurrent abdominal pain, and appetite fluctuations.
Weight, Phlegm-Heat & Metabolism
We observe rapid weight gain, hyperphagia, and sluggish digestion or bowel habits.
Deficiency of Kidney Qi and Yin-Blood
Children who are lean, have low stamina, and eat poorly yet show early pubertal signs require an entirely different therapeutic approach.
In modern medicine, body weight, nutritional status, sleep, stress, and central nervous system regulation interact bidirectionally with the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. Korean medicine concepts such as Kidney Qi Deficiency, Yin Deficiency with Effulgent Fire, and Liver Qi Stagnation provide clinical frameworks linking growth, sleep, emotion, and metabolism with pubertal timing.
Categorizing pediatric patterns centered on herbal medicine
Using an identical heat-clearing formula for all precocious puberty patients is inappropriate. Children with kidney yin deficiency and deficient heat require yin nourishment to moderate excess heat, while children with deficient kidney qi and low stamina need reinforcement of core vitality while monitoring pubertal tempo.
Children with marked stress and liver qi stagnation require resolving constraint and regulating sleep and emotional hyperarousal. Children with rapid weight gain and digestive/bowel issues require treatment targeting the spleen-stomach and metabolic health.
SOIAN Korean Medicine Clinic designs therapy around constitution herbal medicine based on these differentiations. Constitution acupuncture is combined to regulate digestion, sleep, thermal comfort, and tension, while growth Chuna is selectively applied for muscular/articular tightness restricting activity. When clenching, cervical tension, snoring, and restless sleep co-occur, TMJ and upper cervical alignment are also evaluated.
CLINICAL RESEARCH
Herbal Medicine Confirmed in International Clinical Studies
In China and Taiwan, clinical research has accumulated on formulas tailored to kidney yin deficiency, deficient heat, and liver constraint—such as Zhibai Dihuang Wan, Daboyin Wan, Ziyin Sahuafang, and Zishen Qingganfang—applied to precocious puberty.
Randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews reported improvements in luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol, bone age maturation, and breast/uterine/ovarian developmental parameters following herbal treatment. Large retrospective cohort studies from Taiwan showed herbal-treated groups exhibited slower bone age progression and preserved predicted adult height compared to untreated controls. Studies combining herbal medicine with GnRH agonist injections reported greater improvements in certain sex hormone levels and pubertal parameters than injection monotherapy.
However, formulas, patient populations, and treatment durations varied across studies, and long-term data tracking final adult height remain limited. No single formula can guarantee identical results for every child; treatment must proceed while objectively tracking growth curves, bone age, hormone levels, and pubertal staging.

SOIAN Korean Medicine Clinic references clinical research while avoiding fixed, repetitive prescriptions. We adjust therapeutic strategies by tracking your child's constitution, real growth velocity, pubertal staging, bone age, and laboratory markers.
Utilizing diagnostic tests to precisely direct precocious puberty care
If girls show breast budding before age 8 (chronological age 8.0) or boys show testicular enlargement before age 9, precocious puberty testing should be considered.
When secondary sexual characteristics advance rapidly over months, bone age significantly precedes chronological age, or predicted adult height is compromised, pediatric endocrinologic evaluation is necessary. GnRH agonist injections used for rapidly progressive central precocious puberty suppress prematurely activated sex steroids to buy valuable growth time.
We determine whether herbal monitoring alone is appropriate, whether pediatric endocrinologic treatment is primarily indicated, or whether combined therapy is optimal based on growth curves, bone age, hormonal assays, and rate of progression.
Throughout treatment, we regularly monitor height, weight, breast development, menarche signs, and annual growth velocity. When indicated, repeat bone age radiographs and hormonal tests are conducted to objectively verify that pubertal tempo has stabilized.
The goal is not simply delaying puberty indefinitely
Puberty is a natural developmental process. The objective of treatment is not forcibly halting normal physiology, but preventing puberty and skeletal maturation from advancing too prematurely while the child still has substantial growth potential.
We evaluate kidney qi governing growth and reproduction, yin deficiency heat, stress-induced liver constraint, weight, digestion, and sleep. Constructing care around constitution herbal medicine while objectively verifying growth curves and bone age preserves remaining growth time—this is the core approach of SOIAN Clinic.
Back to 4 Care Cards ↑CONNECTED PEDIATRIC CARE
A child's body does not experience these 4 issues in isolation
Weak appetite and digestion impair nutrient utilization for growth. Rhinitis and recurrent colds disrupt sleep and meals, while poor sleep causes fatigue and reduced physical activity. Body weight, sleep quality, stress, and metabolic health also modulate the onset and tempo of puberty.
SOIAN Korean Medicine Clinic never views height, appetite, rhinitis, and precocious puberty as disconnected symptoms. We evaluate growth curves, weight, appetite, digestion, bowel habits, sleep, respiration, fatigue, emotional tension, activity, and pubertal staging together to prioritize the most essential treatment first.
