Spine Pain & Neck/Back Conditions
Rather than merely treating the label of disc herniation or stenosis, we treat the painful movement patterns and the root causes of recurrence
- Recurrent Neck & Back Pain
- Numbness in Arms & Legs
- Disc Herniation & Stenosis
- Pelvic & Hip Compensation
- Rapid Recurrence After Relief
SUMMARY
Care Guide Summary
If neck and back pain frequently recurs, or if limb numbness and alternating pelvic and shoulder discomfort develop, simply releasing painful areas locally may not be enough.
SOIAN Korean Medicine Clinic conducts comprehensive consultations, physical exams, and neurological tests to distinguish nerve irritation, joint mobility, spinal/pelvic compensation, and neuromuscular tension for active, targeted care.
DETAIL GUIDE
How We Differentiate and Treat Spine Pain and Nerve Irritation
We First Evaluate Impaired Function Rather than Just the Diagnostic Label of Disc or Stenosis
Even when diagnosed with cervical disc herniation, lumbar disc herniation, or spinal stenosis, the actual difficulties patients experience vary considerably. Some suffer primarily from localized neck or lower back pain, others struggle with radiating numbness and pulling tightness down their arms or legs, and some experience leg heaviness and claudication when walking or standing for prolonged periods.
Disc protrusions or degenerative changes visible on imaging do not explain all current pain. Conversely, even with minimal imaging findings, restricted joint motion, excessive compensatory muscle bracing, and sensitized nerves can cause pain severe enough to disrupt daily life.
SOIAN Korean Medicine Clinic never decides treatment based merely on a diagnosis name. We identify which postures and movements trigger pain, where numbness radiates, and how severely sitting, walking, and sleep are compromised to pinpoint the precise functional deficits that require treatment.
We Pinpoint the Core Driver of Pain Through Consultations, Physical Exams & Neurological Tests
In our clinic, we evaluate cervical and lumbar range of motion (flexion, extension, rotation), focal tenderness, muscle guarding, and pelvic/hip biomechanics. When arm or leg numbness is present, we test sensation, motor strength, deep tendon reflexes, and neural tension signs to differentiate simple myofascial pain from active radicular nerve irritation.
For neck pain, we evaluate the TMJ, upper cervical spine, scapulae, and thoracic rib cage movement together. For back pain, we assess pelvic and hip kinematics, foot strike patterns, and how the torso is engaged when transitioning from sitting to standing.
If you have previous X-rays or MRI scans, we review them in conjunction with current physical findings. Rather than ordering duplicate imaging for every patient, we utilize scans when red flags emerge or when results alter the therapeutic plan. What matters most is whether movement, pain, and numbness actually improve before and after treatment.
We Select Acupuncture, Pharmacopuncture, FSC Chuna Therapy & TMJ Balance Therapy Based on Treatment Response
When focal pain, tenderness, and muscle spasm are pronounced, we first treat tension in connected muscles and ligaments using acupuncture and pharmacopuncture. We immediately re-evaluate neck rotation range, trunk flexion/extension, and limb tightness following treatment.
When spinal, pelvic, and hip joints are stiff and specific segments continuously overcompensate, we apply FSC (Functional Systemic Chuna) Therapy. Rather than forcefully manipulating painful segments, this approach recalibrates compensation patterns so the torso, pelvis, and limbs move smoothly in harmony.
When pain recurs across multiple regions and quickly re-stiffens despite temporary relief, we investigate autonomic and central nervous system hypersensitivity. For patients whose neck/back mobility and systemic muscle tension markedly improve upon balancing the jaw, we actively implement TMJ Balance Therapy.
When systemic fatigue, poor sleep, digestive weakness, and cold/heat imbalances delay tissue healing, we combine constitutional acupuncture and herbal medicine. Instead of administering every modality at once, we select the most effective combination tailored to your initial response and lifestyle.
We Actively Restore Preserved Functional Capacity Even in Chronic Pain, Disc Herniation & Stenosis
We do not leave current discomfort unaddressed simply because pain is chronic or degenerative changes exist on imaging. Nerve-irritating tension, stiffened joints, faulty movement compensation, and restricted activity ranges can all be effectively treated now.
For cervical disc patients, we observe whether arm numbness subsides during head/shoulder movement and whether functional hand use increases. For lumbar disc and stenosis patients, we evaluate ease in sit-to-stand transitions, trunk extension, walking distance, and reduced heaviness in the legs.
Treatment is not an unrealistic promise to reverse structural anatomy on an MRI. It is a practical process of subduing active pain and nerve irritation, enabling movement with reduced bodily tension, and substantially restoring the patient's capacity to work, walk, and sleep soundly.
We Judge Progress by Recurrence Intervals and Daily Function Rather Than Fleeting Relief
The goal of spinal pain treatment goes beyond feeling briefly relaxed inside the clinic room.
- Whether range of motion in turning the head and raising the arms expands
- Whether you can sit, stand, and walk for longer durations
- Whether protective muscle guarding decreases when bending and straightening the back
- Whether the distribution and frequency of arm/leg numbness and tightness decrease
- Whether nocturnal pain and morning stiffness improve
- Whether periods of comfort post-treatment lengthen and intervals between flare-ups expand
By comparing these functional markers at every visit, we adjust the balance of acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, Chuna, TMJ Balance Therapy, and herbal medicine. Recurrent pain always has an underlying cause; uncovering and treating that root driver brings lasting real-world changes even to long-standing neck and back pain.
CONSULTATION
Let's Check Your Current Condition Together
If relief is only temporary during treatment before pain returns, examine spinal and pelvic biomechanics, nervous system tension, and habitual compensation patterns alongside the painful site.
