Headache
For headaches that subside with painkillers only to return, we identify and treat the underlying conditions driving recurrence.
- Tight, Constricting Headache
- Throbbing Pain
- Occipital & Temporal Pain
- Neck & Jaw Tension
- Nausea & Dizziness
SUMMARY
Care Guide at a Glance
Even under the broad name of headache, cases involving tight constriction, throbbing pain, neck and shoulder stiffness, or accompanying nausea and dizziness require distinctly prioritized treatment strategies.
At SOIAN Korean Medicine Clinic, we look beyond the painful area to examine neck and TMJ tension, constitution, sleep, fatigue, and digestion, treating both current acute pain and recurrent triggers.
DETAIL GUIDE
How We Classify and Treat Headaches
Differentiating Specific Headache Manifestations
Effective headache care goes beyond asking where it hurts. Treatment directions change significantly when we identify exact onset timing, episode duration, and aggravating factors.
- Whether the entire head feels tight and heavy, or one side throbs
- Whether pain pulls from the back of the head toward temples and periorbital area
- Whether sensitivity to light or sound occurs with nausea
- Whether the jaw and neck are stiff in the morning or teeth clenching occurs
- Whether episodes recur on days with fatigue, poor sleep, or around menstruation
- Whether painkiller effectiveness is shortening or dosage frequency is increasing
- Whether headaches accompany dizziness, brain fog, or digestive discomfort
True progress requires evaluating not only pain intensity, but episode frequency, duration, and baseline well-being on headache-free days.
Assessing Cervical and TMJ Tension Radiating to the Head
Stiffness in the occipital, cervical, and shoulder muscles can pull on the back of the head and radiate toward the temples or eyes. We check whether head flexion or rotation alters the pain, and whether treating the neck alleviates cranial pressure.
For patients with clenching, bruxism, or frequent tightness in the temporalis and masseter muscles, we evaluate bilateral TMJ balance and mandibular opening mechanics. If neck and head tension rapidly recurs after acupuncture and pharmacopuncture, or if headaches co-occur with chronic neck, shoulder, and upper back tension, TMJ Balance Therapy may be indicated.
TMJ Balance Therapy does not reduce headaches to a simple jaw issue. It is selectively applied to patients whose neck and whole-body tension, pain, and mobility demonstrate verified improvement when jaw alignment is balanced.
Evaluating Constitution for Headaches Linked with Sleep, Digestion, and Fatigue
Headaches often worsen following overwork, sleep deprivation, indigestion, or feelings of bodily heaviness. Recurrence patterns vary across individuals depending on menstrual cycle, climacteric changes, thermal sensitivities, and autonomic stress responses.
SOIAN Clinic comprehensively evaluates sleep depth, digestion, elimination, temperature regulation, and fatigue recovery rates. We assess how cranial and cervical tension, tenderness, and range of motion change before and after constitutional acupuncture, prescribing tailored herbal medicine when recurrent headaches are closely linked to systemic imbalances.
Selecting Treatments Based on Pain Phase and Clinical Response
When acute pain and distinct occipito-cervical tenderness are present, acupuncture and pharmacopuncture are first used to relieve tension. If cervical and thoracic mobility is restricted and posture influences pain, FSC Chuna Therapy can be combined.
If headaches recur alongside multi-site pain, whole-body tension quickly returns post-treatment, and clear TMJ responsiveness is observed, TMJ Balance Therapy is considered. When sleep, digestion, fatigue, and constitutional factors delay recovery, the role of herbal medicine is emphasized.
We do not administer every modality simultaneously. After evaluating how pain, tenderness, and neck-jaw movement respond during initial sessions, care is structured around the most responsive methods.
Tracking Headache-Free Hours and Functional Recovery
Treatment progress is not judged solely by a single day's pain score.
- Whether headache frequency and episode duration are decreasing
- Whether onset pain is prevented from escalating to severe intensity
- Whether the need for acute analgesic medications is decreasing
- Whether the recurrence rate of neck and jaw muscle tightness is slowing
- Whether sleep, cognitive focus, and daily activities are becoming more comfortable
Even with frequent headaches, precise differentiation of patterns and recurrent conditions clarifies clinical priorities. SOIAN Clinic combines therapies that relieve present pain with treatments that regulate triggers of recurrence.

Examine Your Current Condition Together
We evaluate recurrent headache patterns alongside cervical, TMJ, and systemic physical states.
