Joint & Ligament Injury
For joints that stay swollen after sprains or ache with prolonged use, we treat both tissue injury and kinetic movement.
- Recurrent Sprains
- Swelling & Heat Sensation
- Joint Instability
- Catching During Movement
- Shoulder, Knee, Wrist & Ankle Pain
SUMMARY
Care Guide at a Glance
When shoulders, knees, wrists, or ankles suffer recurrent pain or frequent sprains, care must address ligament stability and joint mechanics beyond simple inflammation.
SOIAN Clinic differentiates acute injuries, overuse strain, chronic instability, and degenerative changes, tailoring acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, Chuna therapy, and herbal medicine to each healing phase.
DETAIL GUIDE
How We Evaluate Joint and Ligament Pain
Identifying Injury Timeline and Joint Dysfunction
Joint pain can occur acutely from sudden trauma or develop insidiously from repetitive strain and chronic joint laxity. Our clinical evaluation examines both the pain location and dynamic joint kinematics.
- Whether there is acute post-sprain swelling, heat, and weight-bearing difficulty
- Whether the joint feels like giving way, buckling, or subluxating
- Whether movement causes catching, locking, or clicking sounds
- Whether pain is triggered by specific actions like stairs, walking, squatting, or arm elevation
- Whether symptoms ease with rest but re-swell and ache with prolonged use
- Whether the same ankle or wrist is repeatedly sprained
- Whether avoiding pain has led adjacent joints and muscles to stiffen
Acute sprains, tendon/ligament overuse, periarticular muscle guarding, chronic laxity, and degenerative changes each require distinct treatment intensities and sequencing.
Assessing Pain Site, Joint Stability, and Kinetic Compensation
When ligaments stretch or tear, joint restraint weakens and subtle alterations occur in articular tracking. If joint instability or movement-evoked pain persists after swelling subsides, we assess tenderness, range of motion, and joint laxity.
The shoulder moves in coordination with the cervical spine, scapula, and humerus, while knees and ankles are governed by pelvic/hip alignment and ground reaction forces. If compensatory guarding develops to protect an injured joint, pain can easily recur even after local tissue healing.
SOIAN Clinic focuses on the painful joint while evaluating adjacent kinetic segments, spinal alignment, and pelvic mechanics to identify sources of recurrent joint overload.
Phase-Specific Care Across Acute, Recovery, and Chronic Stages
During the acute stage with marked edema, erythema, and tenderness, gentle acupuncture and pharmacopuncture relieve pain and reactive muscle spasm without excessive joint mobilization. In the recovery phase as swelling recedes, we systematically restore restricted muscle and joint mobility.
When maltracking repeatedly strains the same ligament, Chuna manual therapy is applied. Rather than forceful joint manipulation, gentle realignment guides the joint and surrounding structures into harmonious, pain-free kinematics based on patient comfort and joint stability.
When post-injury swelling and pain linger chronically, or when degenerative changes coincide with diminished vitality, tailored constitutional herbal medicine is combined. Modalities are selectively prescribed according to tissue injury stage and initial clinical response.
Assessing Body Axis Alignment and Neurological Responses in Chronic Pain
When a joint hurts chronically, the body tenses surrounding muscles and alters posture and gait to protect the injured area. If prolonged, these protective compensations cause lingering movement restrictions and secondary pain elsewhere.
When neck, low back, and multiple peripheral joints ache alternately, or when post-treatment relief is quickly followed by whole-body stiffness, we evaluate central axis biomechanics. We restore spinal and pelvic functional connectivity, and for patients with multi-site pain and systemic tension responsive to jaw alignment changes, TMJ Balance Therapy is considered.
Focusing on Stable Movement Quality and Prolonging Remission Intervals
Progress in joint and ligament rehabilitation is not judged by a solitary pain rating.
- Whether swelling, local heat, and tenderness are resolving
- Whether joint range of motion and feelings of instability improve
- Whether functional movements such as walking, stair climbing, sit-to-stand, and arm lifting become comfortable
- Whether post-activity pain flare-ups and recurrent swelling decrease
- Whether intervals between recurrent sprains or pain episodes are significantly prolonged
SOIAN Clinic actively alleviates acute pain while restoring joint stability and enabling patients to return comfortably to everyday activities.
