Dry Eye & Eye Fatigue

If your eyes quickly feel gritty again after using artificial tears, we treat tear film stability, periocular tension, and systemic dryness together.

  • Eye grittiness & foreign body sensation
  • Recurrent redness
  • Blurred vision
  • Retro-orbital pressure & headache
  • Dry mouth & systemic dryness

SUMMARY

Care Guide Summary

Many patients suffer from stinging, sandy grittiness in the eyes, blurred vision after prolonged screen use, and recurring retro-orbital pressure and headaches.
SOIAN Korean Medicine Clinic looks beyond tear volume alone to evaluate tear film stability, periocular/neck/jaw tension, sleep, digestion, dry mouth, and constitution together for treatment.

DETAIL GUIDE

We classify and treat dry eye and eye fatigue in this way

We assess how dryness, tearing, redness, and blurred vision present together

Dry eye does not result solely from low tear production. When the tear film destabilizes easily or tears evaporate rapidly, the eyes dry out yet water reflexively from irritation, causing redness, stinging, foreign body sensations, and blurred vision.

  • Whether dryness begins in the morning or worsens in the afternoon and after screen work
  • Whether blinking temporarily clears blurred vision
  • Whether there is a sandy foreign body sensation and burning
  • Whether your eyes water frequently yet still feel dry inside
  • Whether redness, light sensitivity, retro-orbital pressure, and headaches accompany the condition
  • Whether you are sensitive to contact lenses, air conditioning/heating, and wind
  • Whether dry mouth, dry skin, joint pain, and systemic fatigue co-occur
  • Whether symptoms worsen when the neck, shoulders, jaw, and temples become stiff

We also assess screen time duration, frequency of using artificial tears, sleep patterns, menstrual/menopausal changes, and current medications. Even with identical dry eye complaints, treatment differs depending on whether ocular surface irritation, overwork and neck tension, or systemic dryness and depleted recovery capacity are primary.

We assess periocular, neck, and jaw tension through real-time physical responses

Prolonged screen viewing reduces blink rate and pulls the head forward, accumulating tension in the temples, eyebrows, neck, and shoulders. Many patients experience dimmer vision and pulling retro-orbital tension on days when they clench their jaw or have a stiff neck.

At SOIAN Korean Medicine Clinic, we evaluate tenderness around the eyes, temples, occiput, and neck/shoulders, observing how changes in jaw and neck movement affect ocular pressure, accommodative strain, and headaches. Rather than solely treating the eyes locally, we treat the posture and nervous system responses that perpetuate eye tension.

When eye fatigue and headaches recur alongside multi-site pain and dizziness—improving immediately after treatment but returning as the neck and jaw stiffen again—we also assess the responses of the central axis and temporomandibular joint. We selectively apply Chuna therapy or TMJ balance therapy only when distinct, positive changes are verified in the patient.

Periocular acupuncture and pharmacopuncture are performed on safe surrounding tissues, not the eyeball

Periocular acupuncture does not puncture the eyeball itself. We select safe acupoints around the eyebrows, temples, face, head, and neck to relieve indurated tissues and tenderness. We immediately assess changes in the ease of opening the eyes, grittiness, retro-orbital pressure, and headaches following treatment.

Pharmacopuncture is applied in minute amounts to relevant sites around the eyes, temples, and neck to alleviate deep tension and stagnation. Depending on whether redness and heat sensations predominate, dryness and constricted vision predominate, or neck/jaw tension and headaches predominate, we customize the treatment sites and types of pharmacopuncture.

We avoid repetitive strong stimulation in sensitive patients. We carefully adjust stimulation intensity and treatment intervals by monitoring changes in same-day photophobia and dryness, as well as next-day fatigue following screen work.

We treat recurring dryness and depleted recovery capacity using constitution-based acupuncture and herbal medicine

Treatment cannot be identical for someone prone to facial heat flare-ups and post-stress redness, someone lacking body fluids with dry mouth and dry skin, and someone with weak digestion and depleted stamina who struggles to keep their eyes open in the afternoon.

Constitution-based acupuncture regulates tension concentrated in the upper body and directs systemic circulation based on pulse patterns, cold/heat dynamics, sleep, digestion, and fatigue. Constitution-based herbal medicine is prescribed according to whether heat and stagnation, fluid and blood deficiency, or overwork and low recovery capacity are primary.

When severe dry eye and dry mouth co-occur, or when joint pain and skin dryness accompany them, we also evaluate autoimmune, hormonal, and medication factors. Rather than prescribing strictly by disease label, we treat systemic conditions so the eyes can sustain comfort.

We distinguish dry eye from cataracts, glaucoma, and macular disease while co-managing overall ocular health

Dry eye involves the ocular surface and tear film, whereas cataracts, glaucoma, and macular diseases are distinct conditions requiring structural and functional assessment of the lens, optic nerve, and retina. We never conflate them into a single condition nor claim to replace ophthalmologic care.

However, patients managing existing eye conditions can still experience dryness, redness, eye strain, headaches, and neck tension. While maintaining necessary ophthalmological examinations and treatments, SOIAN Korean Medicine Clinic actively treats the real dryness, fatigue, and systemic recovery state experienced by the patient.

Progress is evaluated by the intervals between using artificial tears, comfortable screen time, how clearly blinking restores vision, reductions in redness, photophobia, headaches, and neck/shoulder tension. As treatment progresses, we look for longer periods where you forget about eye discomfort throughout the day and faster recovery from dryness and pressure even on tiring days.

A sudden visual field defect or sensation of a falling curtain, sudden spikes in flashes and floaters, severe eye pain with redness and vomiting, or vision changes after trauma or chemical exposure require immediate emergency ophthalmological evaluation.
